The Experiment: 0 grams of Added Sugar. No candy, no soda. But also: No Pasta Sauce (it has sugar), No Bread (sugar), No Ketchup (mostly sugar).
I realized quickly: Sugar is in everything.
> DAY 1: THE DISCOVERY PHASE
I went grocery shopping. I felt like a detective finding evidence of a crime.
- Granola: 12g Added Sugar (It's labelled "Healthy"!)
- Yogurt: 18g Added Sugar (That's a candy bar)
- Sriracha: Sugar is the 2nd ingredient
I ended up buying eggs, spinach, and plain meat. My diet became "Paleo" by necessity.
> DAY 2: THE HEADACHE
At 2 PM, the headache arrived. It sat behind my eyes. This is the "Keto Flu." My brain was screaming for quick glucose.
I ate an apple. It tasted like the sweetest treat on earth. Fruit sugar (Fructose) was allowed, but processed sugar was banned.
> SYMPTOM TRACKER
Headache
Rage / Irritability
Fatigue
Clarity
Energy
> DAY 3: THE RAGE
I snapped at my friend for chewing too loudly. I almost cried because the WiFi was slow.
Sugar releases opioids and dopamine in the brain. I was literally going through drug withdrawal. My brain was trying to emotionally manipulate me into eating a donut.
> DAY 5: THE TURN
I woke up, and the fog was gone. I didn't need coffee.
My energy was stable. Usually, I crash at 3 PM. Without the insulin spike/crash cycle of a sugary lunch, I was a flat line of productivity.
> THE TASTE BUD RESET
On Day 7, I ate a bell pepper. It tasted sweet. Like, actually sweet.
My taste buds had un-numbed themselves. Modern food is so hyper-palatable that we lose the ability to taste natural flavors. Resetting that baseline was shocking.
> CONCLUSION
I am back on sugar now, but in moderation. I will never look at Ketchup the same way again (It's just red corn syrup).
If you have brain fog, try quitting sugar for 3 days. The clarity is worth the Day 2 headache.
